Name: ‘Familia’ [Latin] Family.
The name Familia is a nod to the 3 families of Growers in the McLaren Vale region from whom these grapes were sourced. The style is classic, out of respect to the tradition of the growers that work with us to grow classic, premium McLaren Vale Shiraz.
“Supple and generous, with seamless flavors of raspberry coulis and black cherry, accented by clove, cinnamon and white pepper details that linger effortlessly, complemented by black tea hints. Drink now through 2026. ” Wine Spectator, 30th November 2016
Tasting Notes – This is a lively, rich McLaren Vale Shiraz, showing all the hallmarks of style and driving acidity that are hallmarks across the Ulithorne range. Plum, fresh cherries, a lick of pepper and cedar spice make this a classic Shiraz to share with friends and family.
Vintage 2015 came early and we were hand picking the first of our vineyards in the first week of February. The fruit advanced through ripening in late Spring, after a longer than usual flowering period. A cooler January allowed the fruit to hang through the cool phase and build in flavor and ripeness. As soon as the sun warmed up the ground and surrounding air again in early February, the vines built final ripeness and the berries hung ready for picking. It was very dry through the months of vintage, which required some small amounts of additional watering by our growers of some of the Blewitt Springs sandy soil vineyards. The Shiraz was particularly pretty this vintage – full of spice, vibrancy of colour, great tannin balance and extended length of the fruit on the palate. This vintage showcases the generosity of flavour, and liveliness that good quality Shiraz brings to the palate.
