Ulithorne ‘FAMILIA’ Shiraz 2016

Name: ‘Familia’ [Latin] Family.

Tasting Notes: This is a lively, rich McLaren Vale Shiraz, showing all the hallmarks of style and driving acidity that are hallmarks across the Ulithorne range.
Plum, fresh cherries, a lick of pepper and cedar spice make this a classic Shiraz to share with friends and family. The name Familia is a nod to the families of Growers in the McLaren Vale region from whom these grapes were sourced. The style is classic, out of respect to the tradition of the growers that work with us to grow classic, premium McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Technical Notes: A blend of 3 premium parcels of Shiraz, hand & machine harvested, depending on each of the vineyards, in late Feb through to early March 2016. The fruit is cooled overnight in the winery and then fermented separately in small open fermenters with hand plunging twice a day.
The wine is then put to old French oak and stainless tanks to maximize freshness of fruit flavours and premium maturation environment for 12 months.

Vintage 2016: It was very dry through the months of vintage, which required some small amounts of additional watering by our growers of some of the Blewitt Springs sandy soil vineyards. The Shiraz was particularly pretty this vintage – full of spice, vibrancy of colour, great tannin balance and extended length of the fruit on the palate. This vintage showcases the generosity of flavour, and liveliness that good quality Shiraz brings to the palate.

“Balsamic, tight with a crammed reduction of red fruits and glorious acidity. Spiced plum, rhubarb notes, hint of white pepper. Formidably fully powered with a deft touch of seamless mouthfeel. Long and effortless. 96/100” DMWP

“This is immediate and gorgeous on the nose showing black/blueberry, mint chocolate, hazelnut and floral characters. The palate is impressively weighted and generously fruited, and displays excellent fruit richness combined with plush texture and supple tannins. A fabulously expressed shiraz offering superb fruit power. At its best: now to 2024.” 94 Points, TONY KEY – THE KEY REPORT

“Lively berry and plum flavors are brightened by aromatic touches of orange zest and dried lavender, with firm, rustic tannins. Drink now through 2027. ” Wine Spectator
