PATERNUS [Latin] ‘from the father’
VARIETAL: Cabernet Sauvignon
Ulithorne ‘PATERNUS’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
‘Paternus’ is Latin for ‘from the father’ and is a dedication to Frank Harrison who planted the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz on the old Ulithorne vineyard from 1969.
This extremely limited production is set for release for May 2017 to Ulithorne Allocation Members.

‘Paternus’ is Latin for ‘from the father’ and stands tall like a paternal father – being the masculine counter to the Frux Frugis – with its powerful cassis and summer berry flavours, is a great complement to the Frux Frugis’ ripe plum and spicy finesse. This Vintage 2013 release shows the Paternus (for the first time) in its new ‘clothes’; the change of label and slightly weightier bottle, aligns it well to stand beside the Frux Frugis Shiraz. After a less than optimal Cabernet vintage in 2012 we made a choice to de-select Paternus from the Ulithorne 2012 range. With a return to fruit excellence from the old Ulithorne vineyard in 2013 we are delighted to reinstate this award winning wine to the Ulithorne offering.
Both the Cabernet and Shiraz for this blend come from the old Ulithorne vineyard. This unique parcel of Cabernet is highly aromatic and quite unique to the clone. Made for lovers of Cabernet, the fragrance of dark summer berries and cassis from the Cabernet fruit is dominant on the nose with mulberry, ripe plum and a touch of spice from the Shiraz. The palate has great depth and length with a fine tannin structure from the gentle fermentation rate and restrained oak handling; a wine to cellar.

Ulithorne Paternus Cabernet Shiraz 2011
“The nose is calm and focussed while the palate ripples with muscle and shimmers with energy. There is a coolness to the delivery of flavour which calms and soothes but it grows on the palate like a storm and unleashes lightning strikes of spice and blackcurrant fruit in regular bursts. As the flavour dies away and the storm moves on you find yourself drawn back into the maelstrom for another sip. This continues until the bottle is finished. It seems that you have unleashed your very own internal storm-chaser and before long you will required another thrill-seeking ride and you know where to go.”
