Ulithorne UNICUS Shiraz 2014

Ulithorne UNICUS  Shiraz 2014

Tasting Notes
A powerful Shiraz that shows illuminating purity of plums, black currants and a touch of cedar. Spicy clove and black pepper on the nose supported by red and black currant perfume, with a length and drive of well structured tannins to allow the Unicus to cellar well. Bottles are individually numbered.

Hand picked 12th March 2014. Cooled as whole bunches overnight then crushed the following morning and placed into small open fermenters for a gentle fermentation that was complete in 9 days. Cold soaked then basket pressed to new and older French Oak hogsheads and matured for 21 months.

Vintage 2014
Vintage 2014 was another small vintage for McLaren Vale. The quality of fruit is superb, and somehow a little more restrained and elegant than the 2013 vintage. Summer and Autumn offered long cooler days, which allowed for a longer maturation period and time for the grapes to ripen evenly and for natural acidity to build in line with the Baumé.

Shiraz in the vineyard looked and tasted of high quality, with smaller than normal berry sizes adding great fruit flavours from the berries and tannin from the skins. Overall another excellent vintage in McLaren Vale, with lower than average yields.
